Meet Malcolm Farrell, the New Jersey based actor on his way UP

The talented actor is coming to a screen near you

While a few Hollywood stars have blown up over night, the majority of actors who we now know and love took the long and rocky road to stardom. What separates them from the rest is a mentality. Though Malcolm Farrell, a young New Jersey based actor is still on his way up, he has already shown flashes of brilliance, and a much needed mental toughness to match.Initially a sports star who excelled in soccer and baseball, Malcolm took to acting and hasn't looked back. These days, you can spot him in a handful of national commercials including spots for Apple, Ford, Target, Adidas, Chase Bank, and Crate and Barrel. He's worked his way up, building his reel in quality indie films and recently appeared in “Tijuanna Jackson: Purpose Over Prison” starring Romany Malco and Regina Hall. We talked to Malcolm about his promising career and the secrets to his success thus far. Get in tune below!

1. Growing up with a sports background, what was it that pulled you towards acting?

Even though I was heavily involved with sports growing up, I always wanted to act since I was young. Watching movies and shows on television always fascinated me naturally and made me want to do it every time the TV was on. I just never knew what was the process of actually getting on screen. I knew there were auditions but it still kept me curious about the whole process. As well as being shy at a young age, that definitely kept me away from it even more.

2. Congrats on your appearance in “Tijuanna Jackson: Purpose Over Prison”. What was it like being on set and working with Romany Malco and Regina Hall?
Thank you, I appreciate that a lot. Working with Romany Malco and Regina Hall was a great experience. Just to understand how they work on a day to day basis opened up another perspective about movie making to me. This was my first time being on set of a film with name actors so it was great soaking in all of the information they had as well as their chemistry on camera. Most importantly how much teamwork it takes to make a film with the crew and the people you don’t see.

3. When you're going through the process of audition after audition, what keeps you going? Any tips for fellow actors?

One thing I can say that keeps me going is my passion for it and constantly learning about the business. If you don’t truly love it I really think you’ll get burnt out fast because there’s a lot of rejection in this industry before you really strike gold and that’s ok. It’s common but the strong ones survive and look past the struggles because they know it’s only making them better in the long run. Another tip I would say is to learn from multiple coaches. You may never know what works or doesn’t work for you until you experience new methods and teachers.

4. What kind of roles would you want to be considered for? On the contrary, are there any roles in which you'd absolutely not be interested in?
The kind of roles that excite me are the ones that inspire me and push me to do homework and research on. Roles that I can connect with right off of the first read or sides I get for the audition. Once I’m connected with those type of roles, I am all in and can’t wait to dive deeper into their actions. The roles I am not interested in are the ones that have no depth, doesn’t serve me any purpose or the viewers. Usually I have gut feelings about bad roles from the gate and I have learned over the course of time to say “no” to them.

5. You've had some great commercial spots and appearances in films. Looking back, what's been your favorite moment since you've begun your acting journey?

My favorite moment since I’ve begun my acting journey has been the time I found my confidence. It takes a long time to find what works for you, what doesn’t, how you’re portrayed on camera, etc. That by far has been the best moment because once you find your confidence, it shows on camera and in front of casting directors and that’s what they’re looking for. A confident actor who knows what they’re about and how they embrace the role of the character they are auditioning for.
