MLK Day: Celebrating the life of an icon

A "TRUE CHAMPION" OF THE CULTURE

Written by Sheronda PattonOn this day I proclaim a rich history. On this day, we reflect on the thunder that once rang through the air. A victory immersed the racial stronghold of many centuries. Through one beating heart, America was finally waking up.

"MLK’s dream is somewhat deferred. America has lollygagged in the full repeal of racism."

A true champion, Martin Luther King, Jr, is celebrated. His ability to stay calculative and poised resulted in a dream come true. However, as we look on this day, there are worrisome items that need to be discussed. MLK Day is a national holiday that was rejected by many states until 2000. It was initially signed into law in 1983 by Ronald Reagan. This holiday promotes the fortitude of many brave individuals from the Civil Rights Movement. Led by Martin, the nonviolence method was adopted throughout the south, signaling a wave across the nation. The response was an uproar. During the 1960’s the first amendment was in full throttle. America was darkly divided. Radical southerners braced their confederate traditions, responding with nasty lynches, burning houses, wicked kidnaps, aggressive beatings, water hose douses, wrongful arrests, and many many dead bodies.

"His ability to stay calculative and poised resulted in a dream come true."

Familiar as a wave to a tide, in present day, equality is still a need. MLK’s dream is somewhat deferred. America has lollygagged in the full repeal of racism. An unfortunate century it has been. This year marks the 50th anniversary of King’s assassination. Understand the importance of the brilliant martyrs that once walked on this weary soil. In wake of a substantial racial/social divide the liberties to provoke change are in the hands of the citizens.Words from MLK’s famous I Have a Dream speech, “ When we allow freedom to ring-when we let it ring from every city and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last, Free at last, Great God almighty, "We are free at last." America is known for its resilience, hopefully it will uphold Dr. Martin's Dream.
