The passionate artist you just have to hear
In many of his interviews, Bob Marley would often describe the main factor which separates his music from imitators as "The Feel". The late great Marley knew that oftentimes, less is more, and that simplistic authenticity is something most artist seek but can never quite attain. This overall concept is something that the singer and guitarist Xeno Moonflower understands, and if his output of music is any indication, we should be in for some really unique vibes going forward. Combining a rich vocal tone with a soulful reggae style, Moonflower represents the type of sound that does not come along quite often on the musical landscape these days. As far as going forward, he holds no punches when discussing his future goals, upcoming projects and dream collaborations. We have a feeling if Marley was alive, he'd definitely rock with "The Feel" of Xeno Moonflowers work.
1. Where are you from and how did your upbringing help shape your sound musically?
I'm originally from Baltimore, MD. Born & raised. I was able to develop my sound early due to the fact that I'm an introvert, was very shy, and very anti-social. Most of the time I would lock myself into my room and just listen, write, and play music. I would sing out my window as loud as I could so that the neighbors would hear me.
2. Do you find any connections between your painting & music's creative process?
Definitely. I have to let it flow through me. I never force it. Once the feeling, energy is gone I stop. I never want to feel like I'm over thinking it. I have a vision or sound I'm looking to produce and sometimes I get it and sometimes I don't but the outcome is always good. 3. How would you describe your style as a musician? Who do you hope to collaborate with going forward?
My style as a musician I would say is a very eclectic mix. From a mixture of reggae, soul, r&b, with hints of alternative and jazz. I love a good groove and vibe and that's what I like to give through my music. You know give a feel. The meaning of Xeno is the smallest measurable unit of human connection, typically exchanged between passing strangers, a flirtatious glance, a sympathetic nod, a shared laugh about some odd coincidence. Moments that are fleeting and random but still contain powerful emotional nutrients that can alleviate the symptoms of feeling alone. So I make sure I place that element in my songs and writing. Face it, all feel alone sometimes. I want to make sure you're feeling some type of way at the end of the song. Whether it's good or bad. That's all art is right? Producing works to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power.
Going forward I'd love to collaborate with Childish Gambino, John Legend, Pj Morton, Pharrell, Kendrick Lamar, John Mayer & Phillip Phillips. Just to name a few.
4. What's the toughest thing about being an up and coming indie artist like yourself?
I would say having to do everything on your own. It's good and bad. You're able to get done what you need to get done and how you want it done. Being very hands on. Also, that's time taken away from the creative side of it. Not being able to have that backing (financially) to produce all the visions you have as an artist.
5. What's next for you? What do you foresee for yourself as an artist?
Well the next from me, I'm looking to release my EP "The Vibe" this year. Look out for some visuals coming your way. Also, dropping a couple of merch shirts "MNFLWR". What I foresee as an artist is greatness. I see the Grammy's, I see my own tour traveling from state to state & country to country. I see major and minor things that will benefit me as a person, a songwriter, singer, and performer. I can only get better and can only go up from here. Music is my life, & truly saved my life. It's through my music and dedication that it will bring me to so many doors, I just have to open the right ones.
