This fine artist is all set to dominate the Atlanta art scene.
This ATLien is on to something
Searching through the internet for the next big thing often requires hours of going through Soundclouds, galleries and links in bios to find that one talent that truly stands out among the rest. While it may be a daunting task, coming across an artist like Lavance Lining Jr is why we do what we do. His spellbinding "Control System" piece which depicts various politicians controlled like puppets on a string, made us seriously hyped to meet the man behind the art. Turns out the Atlanta based artist was on the cusp of his very first solo show in March 2018, where he plans to unleash his next power moves to the public. For now, you guys will have to settle for our interview on his life, and art. Enjoy!
1. What was your upbringing like and how did you get into art?
I started drawing around age 4-5. I vaguely remember myself as a timid, shy introvert who was insanely curious about the world around me,so I’d draw everything I was interested in. It started with me drawing buildings and faces.
2. What are some of your favorite themes to explore? Do you have a favorite piece that you've done?
I like exploring themes revolving around social issues in relationships, race, and politics. All of my personal work has a deeper meaning, and I like to put ironic twists on memorable moments in pop culture.
3. What's your creative process like? How do you get into the mode to make one of your works?
I'm a very deep thinker so most of the time I meditate & sit with my thoughts for 30 mins to an hour before I start anything. Then once a mental blueprint of an idea surfaces, i listen to music to try to find words to help materialize the idea.
4. What do you wish was different about the art scene if anything?
I’m relatively new to the art scene in Atlanta, but I’d say people respect “clout” more than talent level. I’d love to collaborate with other creatives, but that door is closed until I get a co-sign from a celebrity or develop a major following.
5. Where can we expect to see you in five years?
In 5 years, I plan on expanding, making use off all my talents, and opening as many doors as possible so I can have a platform to spread my message of positivity and raise the mind-state of the masses. I want to work with big brands like the NBA, Cartoon Network, etc. Fine Art is the first step, but I have more in store.IG: @Lavanceliningart
